What is the difference between “Insert” and “Full-Frame” installation?

Insert (Retrofit) Installation

What it is:
Insert installation means the new window is installed directly into your existing window frame. The old frame stays in place, and only the window sash and glass are replaced.

When it’s the right choice:
Retrofit installation works best when your current window frames are in good condition—no rot, warping, or water damage.

Key Benefits:
✔ Faster installation
✔ More affordable than full-frame replacement
✔ Minimal disruption to your home
✔ Preserves interior and exterior trim
✔ Clean, professional finish

Limitations:
❌ Not suitable if frames are damaged or rotting
❌ You can’t change the window’s size or shape
❌ Depends on the strength of the existing structure

Best for:
Homeowners who want a quick upgrade to improve energy efficiency, comfort, and appearance without major construction.

🏗️ Full-Frame Installation

What it is:
Full-frame installation removes the entire window unit—glass, frame, trim, and sometimes siding—and replaces everything with a brand-new window system.

When it’s the right choice:
This method is necessary if your existing frame has rot, mold, water damage, or structural problems, or if you want to change the size, shape, or style of the window.

Key Benefits:
✔ Fixes hidden structural damage
✔ Allows full customization of size and design
✔ Best long-term performance
✔ Improves insulation and weather sealing
✔ Ideal for major renovations

Limitations:
❌ Higher cost than retrofit
❌ Takes more time
❌ More labor and material involved

Best for:
Homes with old, damaged windows or remodeling projects where layout and design changes are needed.

🏡 Which Option Is Right for You?

Choose Retrofit Installation if your frames are solid and you want a fast, budget-friendly upgrade.
Choose Full-Frame Installation if there’s rot, leaks, or if you want to change the window size, style, or structure.
